Shields were used defensively for blocking swords, arrows, spears, and other weapons. But they also were able to be used as a offensive weapon by punching others with the metal boss. Wooden shields often didn’t survive after the fight, there are accounts that state how shields at the end had just enough material to hold in your hand. There is some evidence that the shield board and boss could have been repaired. They would repair the bosses with bronze strips riveted to the underside of the boss. Evidence of boards being repaired is studs on certain planks that don’t match the other planks.
